Navigating Psychological Assessment

Welcome. We understand that beginning the journey of a psychological assessment can feel overwhelming, and we want to assure you that you are not alone. Our team is here to walk with you every step of the way, providing support and understanding as we work together to gain a clearer picture of your or your loved one’s mental and emotional well-being. This guide is designed to help you understand what to expect and why our process is so thorough.

What is a Psychological Assessment?

A psychological assessment is more than just a single test. It’s a comprehensive process that helps us understand your unique strengths, challenges, and experiences, and assist in the development of a program of intervention and supports, where necessary to address identified concerns. We use a variety of tools, including interviews, standardized tests, and observations, to gather information and create a detailed, personalized profile. This information can be incredibly helpful in guiding treatment, educational planning, supports for the individual and/or caregivers/family or simply offering a deeper understanding of oneself.

The Steps of Your Assessment Journey

Here is a general overview of the process, so you know what to expect from start to finish:
Step 1: The Initial Intake.

What Happens During the Intake?

During this appointment, you will meet with a clinician who will ask questions about:

This conversation helps us understand your unique story so we can decide together what the potential sources of concerns are, and what we need to do, to determine the kind of services or supports may be most helpful.

Why is the Intake Important?

The intake is the foundation of the care we provide. By gathering this information, we are able to:

What to Expect

Step 2: The Assessment Sessions

The assessment often includes different types of tasks and questionnaires, depending on the questions being asked. These may include:

Testing may take several hours, and sometimes appointments are split into more than one day so the person being assessed does not become too tired.

Step 3: Data Analysis and Integration

This is the most time-intensive part of the process, and it all happens behind the scenes. Our clinicians carefully analyze all the information we have gathered—from your interviews, test results, and any other records we have reviewed. They integrate this information to build a cohesive, comprehensive picture. This is a crucial step to ensure the accuracy and quality of your final report.

Step 4: The Feedback Session

The feedback session is a time for us to review and add to previously gathered background information, combine the intake and the assessment data, gather additional data that we now need based on the data (sometimes we do some further assessment here), discuss the findings, develop and review the recommendations/program of intervention and supports, and answer any questions you may have. We present the information in a clear and compassionate way, so you can feel empowered by the results.

Step 5: Receiving Your Final Report

After the feedback session, you will receive a copy of your full report. This is a detailed document that you can use to guide future care with other providers, at school, or in your personal life.

We want to be open and honest about the current demand for psychological assessment services. We are a clinic that is deeply committed to serving under-resourced populations, including those with Medicaid, and the need for our services is overwhelming. This means that after your assessment sessions are complete, it may take longer than expected to receive your final report.

The reason for this is simple: each report is a handcrafted, meticulous document that takes many hours to prepare. We do not believe in rushing this process, as doing so would compromise the quality and accuracy of the results. Your well-being is our top priority, and we believe you deserve a thorough and thoughtful report that truly reflects your unique experience.

We ask for your patience and kindness with our staff during this time. They are working tirelessly to provide high-quality care to every individual who walks through our doors. We know that waiting can be difficult, but please know that we are working diligently to get your report to you as soon as possible.
